Our public defender system is seriously in crisis, with jailed defendants about to be released if no attorneys can be assigned to handle their cases, (“Judge to Oregon sheriffs: Release people from jail who don’t have lawyers within 7 days of 1st court appearances,” Nov. 2). I wouldn’t expect their release to be a good thing for a safer Portland. I suggest that we take a similar approach to the way we handle another public legal need: jury selection. Establish a rotating system of assignments for attorneys practicing in Portland, without regard to their current high pay or position, as a contribution to the safety of this city, and at the normal jurist’s payment. Everyone with the required skills should be putting in a bit of their time to help Portland solve this crisis.
