Mar. 25—ROCHESTER — Volunteer attorneys are again preparing to help low-income seniors update their wills and related documents.
Legal Assistance of Olmsted County has opened registration for seniors needing assistance in drafting a will, healthcare directive and power of attorney.
The free event has openings for 18 people between 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. on May 2 and May 3 at the organization’s offices, 1700 N. Broadway Ave., suite 124.
Registration is required to confirm income and age eligibility. Anyone wanting to schedule a session with one of the attorneys can call the LAOC office at 507-287-2036 or email Volunteer attorney Program Coordinator Samantha Sas at volunteer-coordinator@laocmn.org.
After registration, a questionnaire will be sent to each participant, which must be filled out and taken to the LAOC office when meeting with an attorney.
LAOC Executive Director Karen Fairbairn Nath has pointed out that reviewing wills and related documents is important, even for people who don’t have large estates. The paperwork will dictate how possessions are dispersed after someone dies.
In addition to offering legal assistance, the first day of the two-day event will include advocates from the Elder Network, who can provide connection to additional community resources.
While there is not a deadline to register, Sas suggested signing up as soon as possible to ensure a slot is available.
