LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The man who climbed the Sphere in Las Vegas this week told police that his lawyers “will get him off on this incident,” according to an arrest report.
Maison Des Champs, 24, was taken into custody on charges of destroying property of another, conspiracy to destroy private property, and disregard for safety of persons or property.
Des Champs, who goes by the nickname “Pro-Life Spider-Man,” is known for climbing high-rises around the country to protest abortion.
In an arrest report, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police wrote that they got a call about Des Champs climbing the Sphere just after 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.
Officers made contact with Des Champs at the top of the Sphere and took him into custody.
Sphere staff estimated his climbing the exterior of the venue resulted in $100,000 worth of damage to the LED pucks that line the exosphere.
According to the arrest report, Des Champs admitted to climbing the Sphere and said he wanted to raise money for a pregnant woman so she wouldn’t feel like she’d have to get an abortion.
“Maison told me that he has been arrested several times for climbing other buildings and that he has never been convicted and that his attorneys will get him off on this incident as well,” the report states.
Three other people were taken into custody and identified as co-defendants. They were also arrested on suspicion of the same charges as Des Champs.
There is heightened security in Las Vegas this week for Super Bowl LVIII, which will be played Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.
