Samantha Renteria Among Two Killed in Head-On Accident on Highway 74 [Perris, CA]

Head-On Crash on Highway 74 in Perris Kills Man and Woman

PERRIS, CA (August 23, 2023) – Samantha Hernandez Renteria was among two people who died in a head-on accident in Perris late Sunday evening on August 20.

The fatal accident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Highway 74, just west of Seventh Street. According to the California Highway Patrol, Renteria was driving a 2021 Nissan Sentra westbound on the highway. At the same time, a 20-year-old Lake Elsinore man was driving a 2008 Honda CRV eastbound.

For unknown reasons, the Honda traveled across painted double yellow lines and entered the westbound traffic. It then collided head-on with the Nissan. Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced both drivers dead at the scene.

Renteria was a 23-year-old Costa Mesa resident. The name of the other driver was not immediately available.

Storm cells spawned by Tropical Storm Hilary were generating high winds and intense rain throughout Perris Valley at the time, but it was unclear whether the inclement weather played a role in the crash.

Further investigation is underway.
