The number of migrants crossing the southern border in the San Diego sector has reached a level not seen in 20 years, according to border officials.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said more than 230,000 migrants have surrendered or have been apprehended since the beginning of the fiscal year, according to Fox 5 San Diego.
Border apprehensions in the San Diego region have reached a point that more holding areas are needed just east of town, according to CBP. Migrants said they are fleeing South American and Central American countries for their own safety, per the outlet.
The welcome center where migrants are being processed has deciphered about a dozen different languages from those seeking asylum, with many of them seeking asylum on the U.S. East Coast, the report states.
The city and other organizations continue to grapple with the growing crisis.
“Many do not know where they are, that this is San Diego, this is (the) San Diego region, the nearest airport is San Diego and how to get to their final destination. That is what we’re trying to provide support with,” Paulina Reyes-Perrariz, managing attorney for Immigrant Defenders Law Center’s cross-border initiative, told the Associated Press in October.
