Both Motta and Giles were temporarily suspended from practicing law when the Supreme Court of Louisiana on Friday granted prosecutors’ request to ban them from doing so. The state’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel will transfer their clients’ cases to different lawyers if applicable, according to court records.
Attorneys for both Motta and Giles couldn’t be reached by phone Friday, but Motta’s attorneys have denied her involvement in the scheme in the past.
“If these accidents were in fact staged, my client was also a victim and taken advantage by others,” said Motta’s attorney, Sean Toomey, earlier this month.
Motta’s fiancé, Sean Alfortish, is accused of directing the wrecks with the team and of trying to silence Cornelius Garrison, a federal witness who worked as a “slammer” in the scheme. Garrison was killed in September of 2020 in Gentilly, and another alleged slammer, Ryan Harris, pleaded not guilty to charges that he gunned Garrison down to keep him from talking with investigators.
Conspiring to commit fraud, the charge Motta, Giles and Alforitsh each face, carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years upon conviction. They each also face sentences of up to 20 years and up to 10 years if convicted of the witness tampering and obstruction of justice counts.
