KINGSTON, N.Y. — Republican candidate Michael Kavanagh outraised his Democratic opponent in the race for Ulster County district attorney over the past three months, but Emmanuel Nneji received more than twice the number of campaign donations, according to filings with the state Board of Elections.
According to the 32-day pre-general election filing, Kavanagh raised $71,480 from 189 donors between July 13 and Oct. 2. All but 11 of those contributions came from donors within Ulster County. Donations ranged in amount between $25 and $5,000 with the bulk of the contributions ranging between $100 and $1,000. Additionally, Kavanagh loaned his campaign $18,237, bringing his total receipts during that timeframe to $89,237.
Nneji, meanwhile, raised $47,077 from 382 donors — including 49 donors from outside Ulster County — between July 13 and Oct. 2. Contributions to his campaign ranged in amount from $2.50 to $6,000 with the majority of donations ranging between $50 and $500.
Kavanagh, who is making his second run for the position, went into the election cycle with $24,560 and spent $46,231.97, leaving him with a war chest of $43,485 going into the final weeks of the race.
Nneji began the election cycle with $51,902.68 and spent $55,805.09, leaving him with $43,175.03 in his campaign coffers.
Nneji, who is making his first bid for elected office, currently serves as chief assistant district attorney under District attorney David Clegg.
Clegg announced earlier this year that he would not seek election to a second four-year term in office.
Nneji will hold the Democratic and Working Families lines on the ballot.
Kavanagh is a former district attorney who served as chief assistant district attorney under former District attorney Holley Carnright. He ran unsuccessfully against Democrat David Clegg for the position in 2019, losing to the Democrat by 78 votes.
Kavanagh, who unenrolled from the Republican party before embarking on his new bid, will hold the Republican and Conservative lines.
For the second time, Kavanagh was listed as the largest contributor to his campaign making two loans totaling $18,237.
Additionally, he received a $5,000 contribution from the law firm of Manietti and Manietti, where Kavanagh is employed, as well as a $2,500 donation from the Ulster County Republican Committee.
According to the campaign filing, Kavanagh received contributions from area attorneys and the two most recent former Ulster County public defenders, as well as former District attorney Holley Carnright, retired judges, current and former county legislators and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Association.
Donors to Nneji’s campaign during the most recent cycle included attorneys, former Comptroller Elliott Auerbach and the Democratic committees in Saugerties, Wawarsing, Denning and Marbletown.
The next campaign finance filing is due on Oct. 27 and will cover the period between Oct. 3 and Oct. 23.
Early voting begins on Oct. 28. Election Day is Nov. 7.
