Judge rules on Ethan Crumbley’s placement; attorneys hammering out logistics for Oxford school shooter’s sentencing – The Oakland Press

With his sentencing hearing now just seven weeks away, Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, 17, will remain in the Oakland County Jail rather than be transferred to the county’s juvenile facility, a judge ruled Friday.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Kwame Rowe made the decision —- as he has done monthly since Crumbley was locked up nearly two years ago — at a state-mandated, monthly hearing for juveniles held in adult jails.

Both the prosecution and defense said they had nothing to add at the hearing, held via Zoom. Crumbley spoke only to acknowledge that he could hear the proceeding and consented to have it held remotely.

Rowe said keeping Crumbley at the jail “continues to be in the interest of justice,” based on reasons previously stated. For juvenile offenders in adult facilities, it must be shown that his needs are being adequately met — including education, nutrition and more.

Following Friday’s placement hearing, the judge and attorneys were to immediately meet via Zoom to “discuss logistics” for Crumbley’s sentencing hearing. A large number of victim impact statements are anticipated at the sentencing, scheduled for Dec. 8.

Crumbley was 15 years old when he opened fire at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021, killing four students — Madisyn Baldwin, 17, Tate Myre, 16, Justin Shilling, 17, and Hana St. Juliana, 14. Six other students and one teacher were wounded by gunfire.

Crumbley pleaded guilty last October to all 24 crimes he was charged with in connection with the mass shooting: four counts of first-degree murder, one count of terrorism causing death, seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.

In late September, Rowe ruled that Crumbley is eligible for life without parole. If the judge opts to sentence him to a term of years, the minimum would be 25 years.

Crumbley is held in a section of the Oakland County Jail’s infirmary where he’s separated from adult inmates. Among those inmates are his parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, charged with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter in connection with their son’s crimes. They’re accused of providing the handgun used in the shootings and not properly addressing their son’s mental health needs. Their trial is scheduled to start in January.

Last week, Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews denied the Crumbley parents’ request to attend Ethan Crumbley’s sentencing hearing.

The next placement hearing for Crumbley is scheduled for Nov. 17.
