RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Pennington County State’s attorney’s Office’s annual report came out yesterday on Thursday, Feb. 29, reflecting on the work they did in 2023.
Prosecutors in the state’s attorney’s office file close to 10,000 criminal cases each year.
While drug crimes are still the number one prosecuted felony in Pennington County, the state’s attorney says what sits at number two is surprising.
“The number two top prosecuted felony charge is aggravated assault domestic violence. That’s one that really hit me hard, especially in light of the fact that our community just experienced a domestic violence homicide. That’s one that I really want to drill down on and one that alarmed me,” said Pennington County State’s attorney Lara Roetzel.
Roetzel hopes the community will do their best to watch for red flags and reach out with resources to support the victims early on in hopes of preventing domestic violence. WAVI in Rapid City is a known resource for victims suffering from domestic violence.
