Attorneys will prepare wills and estate documents for free for law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics and health care workers in San Diego and Imperial counties Oct. 17 through Nov. 14.
The San Diego County Bar Association and the national Wills for Heroes Foundation will partner to prepare wills, advance health care directives and durable powers of attorney for property.
The annual Wills for Heroes program started in South Carolina after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Last year, 19 attorneys assisted 51 clients locally. This year’s event, organizers said, is expected to attract more attorney volunteers — and more clients. Attorneys will provide the services remotely via calls and video platforms.
The program switched to a virtual setup in 2020 after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Wills for Heroes program aims to give first responders and their families the peace of mind they deserve for the sacrifices they make every day to serve and protect our community,” the bar association said in a statement.
The list of eligible participants includes correctional and probation officers, doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and pharmacists. Participants qualify if their estate and net worth is valued at less than $500,000. Net worth includes cash, personal property, stocks and bonds, savings, real estate equity, cash value of life insurance policies and retirement assets such as a 401(K) and an Individual Retirement Account.
