Attorneys say Warren police were speeding when they were involved in fatal crash – Macomb Daily

A law firm representing the families of two people who were killed earlier this week in a crash involving Warren police say they have obtained video footage they shows officers were traveling at a “dangerously” high rate of speed.

Southfield-based Fieger Law has been retained to represent the families of Cedric Hayden, 34, and DeJuan Pettis, 33, who were both killed on Monday morning when a Warren police patrol car collided with a Dodge Durango on Schoenherr Road near Prospect Avenue.

Attorneys said they plan to file a lawsuit against the department.

“We have assembled a team in place to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash with the sole focus of obtaining all the evidence to get justice for the families of Cedric and DeJuan,” said James Harrington, a managing partner of Fieger Law.

According to a news release from the firm, the officers allegedly were traveling at “an illegal and dangerously high rate of speed causing the crash and death” of the two men. The police car was also traveling without any overhead lights or siren activated, attorneys said.

The speed limit is 40 mph on Schoenherr in the area where the crash happened.

The firm did not say where the obtained the video from.

The two officers in the patrol car also suffered severe injuries and remain hospitalized, according to Warren police. Authorities have not released their names.

WDIV-TV (Channel 4) reported Thursday that the officers were responding to a “be on the lookout” call for a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee. The alert stated there were stolen handguns in the stolen SUV.

Police officials have stated the patrol vehicle was not pursuing any suspects at the time of the incident.

Warren police have turned over the investigation into the crash to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. A spokesperson said the probe should take two to three weeks to complete.

Hayden and Pettis were lifelong friends and loved by their families, and will be deeply missed, the release stated. Family members said the men had just finished their overnight shift at car company.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Pettis’s family. Visit the page here. As of Thursday evening, a little less than $600 had been raised toward a $6,000 goal.
