Members of the Bedford County Bar Association, as well as courthouse employees and others, gathered in the courthouse on Thursday to remember LeGrand Perce III, a former attorney who passed away Sept. 5 at the age of 96.
A Resolution of Respect was submitted by Jill Swiontek, president of the Bedford County Bar Association, and read by attorney William Snyder. (The text of the resolution appears on Page A4 of today’s edition.)
Following the reading, fellow attorneys reminisced about the man commonly known to them as “Gwinn,” who had practiced law in the area since 1956, until his retirement more than six decades later, on July 1, 2019.
attorney Brad Allison remembered Perce as “a good man who gave what he had.” He shared an anecdote about Perce’s antics, retelling a moment when “he took his shoes off and pounded them on the bar in front of the jury,” he recalled, noting that such behavior would likely not be tolerated today.
Judge Thomas Ling said it was a “distinct pleasure and honor” to have known Perce, who he said “encouraged collegiality among members of the Bar.”
“I’m proud to be here today to pay my respects to such a great attorney” Ling said.
Judge Brandi Hershey noted Perce’s great character and “zest for life.” She said she admired how well traveled he was and the lively stories he would tell. She said he was one of the few remaining “gentleman attorneys” and had a great love for procedure.
Judge Travis Livengood said Perce had a style that was all his own, and a drive to bring members of the Bar together. He said he hopes that attorneys will remember to be congenial toward each other in Perce’s memory.
Snyder concluded the memorial service with a brief recounting of Perce’s family history, which included his father, who was an attorney with the Federal Housing Authority, a grandfather who was an attorney in Chicago as well as a congressperson in Mississippi, and a great-grandfather who practiced law in Bedford County.
