“It’s a tool defense attorneys use to try and get their clients the best outcome. It’s a very useful tool. Any client you have under the age of 21, you’re going to apply for youthful offender,” Appell explained. “You don’t have to, but you would be committing legal malpractice if you didn’t.”

Appell clarified that while the potential punishment could be up to three years in prison, it is more likely to result in probation. However, he emphasized that a judge must first approve the application before any such outcome can be determined.
