Founding Fugees member Pras Michel is seeking a new trial after being found guilty of money laundering, illegal lobbying and campaign finance violations in D.C. federal court in April.
While a sentencing date has yet to be determined, the rapper and entrepreneur retained new legal counsel after alleging that his former attorney used artificial intelligence during closing arguments of the trial.
In a motion filed with a federal judge in Washington on Monday, Michel’s new lawyers contend that his former Los Angeles-based counselor David Kenner “used an experimental artificial intelligence (AI) program to draft the closing argument, ignoring the best arguments and conflating the charged schemes, and he then publicly boasted that the AI program ‘turned hours or days of legal work into seconds.’”
Erica Dumas, a spokesperson for the two-time Grammy Award winner, confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday that D.C.-based ArentFox Schiff has been hired as Michel’s new legal representation.
“Pras has hired a team of attorneys from the prominent Washington, DC-based law firm ArentFox Schiff LLP, including Peter Zeidenberg, civil rights attorney and former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, and Scott Peeler,” she said. “They will provide legal representation and advise Mr. Michel at this important juncture as he continues addressing this matter.”
Dumas noted that the firm, which also has offices in New York, “has extensive experience in complex litigation, government investigations, and criminal defense work” and that her client “looks forward to working with them as the case proceeds.”
ArentFox Schiff allege in legal documents that Kenner and his co-counsel have a stake in the program used in Michel’s trial.
“They experimented with it during Michel’s trial so they could issue a press release afterward promoting the program — a clear conflict of interest,” the lawyers claim.
Zeidenberg, a former federal prosecutor, wrote a declaration accompanying Monday’s motion, referring to a May 10 press release for EyeLevel‘s LitAssist issued shortly after Michel’s conviction, promoting how the technology “made history last week, becoming the first use of generative AI in a federal trial.”
Kenner was quoted in the press release, referring to the company’s litigation assistance tools as “an absolute game changer for complex litigation.”
Michel, 50, faces up to 20 years in prison after jurors found him guilty of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., witness tampering and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, CNN reported.
