Six “champions for justice” will be recognized this week by the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc.

Its 19th Annual Champions for Justice Awards Banquet is set for Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Riverside Convention Center.

“The recipients will be recognized as those who have championed the causes of the poor, disabled, seniors, youth and individuals from various ethnic groups in our communities,” a council news release states. “These individuals have also made personal sacrifices so that justice prevails.”

The honorees are:

Civil Rights: Gabriel Maldonado, founder and CEO of TruEvolution, which advocates for health equity and racial justice for the LGBTQ+ community.

Housing: Vonya Quarles, co-founder and executive director of Starting Over Inc., which offers transitional and reentry services for those who have been in the criminal justice system.

Justice: Virginia Blumenthal, founding attorney of Blumenthal and Moore and a member of the Riverside Community College District board.

Community: Damien O’Farrell, president and CEO of the Parkview Legacy Foundation, which works to promote health and wellness in the community.

Community: Jennifer O’Farrell, chief external affairs officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire. She and Damien O’Farrell are married.

Education: Alicia Rix, of the Community Advisory Committee.

The council also has named the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, as the winner of this year’s Champions on the Rise award.

A reception is set to begin at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100 a person or $800 for a table of eight.

Since 1986, the council has helped fight housing discrimination, mediated landlord-tenant disputes and worked to prevent foreclosures in Riverside County.
