The state of Baja California has a new attorney general: lawyer María Elena Andrade Ramírez. She was nominated by Congress for a six-year period and sworn in on Wednesday in Mexicali.
Andrade replaces Ricardo Carpio Sánchez, who left this role on Aug. 11.
Before the new appointment, Andrade was a State Penitentiary System commissioner.
The new attorney general promised in front of news outlets to create a special prosecutor’s office for missing people and an investigation unit, as well as assign a prosecutor to focus on issues affecting women and vulnerable groups.
Andrade is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Baja California with a master’s degree in criminal legal sciences. Among other positions, she spent eight years at the state’s Superior Court of Justice attached to the criminal courts.
In addition, she was deputy attorney general and deputy director general of operational deployment at the former attorney General’s Office in Mexico City.
She was also head of the Municipal Public Safety Department of Mexicali from 2019 to March 2021, when current Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila was mayor of that city.
