After spending two years searching for an attorney, when Joel Geddis, Founder & CEO of ReferU.AI, heard “I’m all in,” a four-year-old girl was able to access legal support that helped move her case forward.
A close friend’s four-year-old girl suffered a traumatic personal injury when Joel Geddis offered to help them recover their damages by finding an attorney. He did what everyone else does: searched online and asked around. After two years, 140 consultations, and just as many “not-a-fit” replies, he finally met his match.Joel Geddis, then a senior executive at Allganize.AI, purchased millions of court records and spun up an AI Agent to analyze them. It surfaced a young, early-career trial attorney he’d previously overlooked. Fifteen minutes into the call, the attorney said, “I’m all in. Question: How’d you find me?”
A single demand letter led to a meaningful settlement for the four-year-old involved.
His hypothesis was that the challenges in finding the right attorney are pervasive. He tested it by searching a leading lawyer directory for “Top DWI attorney Near Me,” and their first organic result tried 0 (zero!) DWIs in that venue that year. After running the same search with his AI Agent, it surfaced an attorney with extensive DWI trial experience and a strong track record, according to publicly available court data.He asked himself, “Dating apps solved chemistry with AI / ML, so why do we still search for attorneys like it’s 1995?” And, in that moment, he realized he had just created a minimum viable product (MVP) and founded ReferU.AI, a matchmaking platform for consumers seeking attorneys.
When someone needs an attorney, often, they’re facing some of life’s most challenging moments, and finding the right attorney should be the easiest lift. However, only 36% of consumers reported finding a lawyer as seamless, and 50% of consumers and 43% of attorneys stated the most important criteria when determining “fit” was success in similar cases. Still, the dominant ways people discover attorneys are based on marketing proxies instead of experience.
Search Engines & AI:
Start with Google, where 43% of people begin their search for an attorney. Law-firm search engine optimization (SEO) playbooks revolve around capturing “high-intent” localized phrases like “[practice area] lawyer near me” and keyword-stuffing their website to game the algorithm. Search ads are even simpler: the higher the budget and ad quality score, the better the placement.
When combined with generalized LLMs trained on broad internet data, the results can sometimes be inconsistent. These systems often reflect the content that is most widely published online, which may not always correlate with an attorney’s relevant case experience.
Referrals & Online Reviews:
Industry experts suggest that referrals — whether from a personal network or other firms—along with online reviews, are among the most influential factors in how clients decide who to contact. Friends and family may recommend lawyers based on one experience, often reflecting subjective measures like attentiveness, communication style, and responsiveness; characteristics that are noise pollution for the signals that matter: demonstrable experience in similar fact patterns. Meanwhile, lawyers are coached to build referral networks with other attorneys and share fees – allowed under ABA Model Rule 1.5(e) – great for economics but not an indicator of fit for one’s case.
Online reviews were supposed to be the democratizer, but review data are famously skewed: ratings follow a J-shaped curve — many 5-stars, a few 1-stars, and little in between — a reflection of who’s motivated to post. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission estimates that a substantial share of reviews are fake or manipulated.20
“Best Of” Lists:
A number of lawyer-ranking and award directories rely on a paid-recognition model, where attorneys can purchase listings or badges. Even legal marketers warn that so-called “vanity awards” are misleading when the defining feature of the honor is whether the lawyer can afford their trophy.
Traditional Lawyer Directories and Bar-Operated Referral Services:
Lawyer directories market their services to attorneys as tools to increase visibility and attract clients. Some legal directory platforms have previously faced scrutiny over how their search ranking practices are structured.
Bar-operated lawyer referral services, often thought to be a neutral starting point, are designed for fairness, not matching. Attorneys are onboarded onto broad self-reported practice-area panels, then screened for location, language, and payment preferences. Referrals are then assigned by “random allotment,” similar to flipping through a Rolodex. While they’re non-profits designed to provide a public service, by “fairly” rotating cases among attorneys, some critics note that matching attorneys based primarily on availability or preference, rather than case-specific experience, may not always align with what every consumer is looking for.
“The irony is that when someone’s family, freedom, or future is at stake, the ecosystem for finding an attorney optimizes for marketing metrics while both clients and lawyers care most about experience in similar legal matters. ReferU.AI exists to fix that.”– Joel Geddis, Founder & CEO of ReferU.AI.
In a private and secure intake session, visitors explain their legal matter in plain language to their AI Agent, “Link.” Then, it analyzes billions of court dockets, filings, opinions, oral arguments, attorney, judicial, and venue analytics, and more, to instantly match users with attorneys who have demonstrable experience in cases just like theirs. Finally, Link automates outreach. It’s free for users and, to maintain the integrity of its service, ReferU.AI does not allow attorney advertising or external factors to influence its algorithm.
Importantly, ReferU.AI is a matchmaking – not an attorney ranking – platform. While docket-level data can surface crude “win rates” (which are easily skewed by case selection), two cases sharing the same label may diverge materially in fact patterns. Instead, ReferU.AI digs into the nuance of each case and makes matches based on a similarity index.
Conversations are private and secure by design. ReferU.AI’s models are not trained on customer data; sensitive information is redacted pre-processing, and the company routinely hires ethical hackers and offers “bug-bounties” for penetration testing.
In a nod to the company’s origin story and the smallest voices in a complex justice system, ReferU.AI is a Public Benefit Corporation and pledges a portion of its profits to support child victims of abuse and neglect.
