Three men were arrested after allegedly abducting a 17-year-old boy and holding him for $500,000 ransom over four days last week.
The alleged kidnappers crashed into the teen’s Jeep Grand Cherokee in San Bernardino County on Monday, then took him as soon as he got out of his vehicle, according to the U.S. attorney‘s Office, Central District of California.
They then drove the boy to Santa Maria, located some 200 miles away on California’s Central Coast.
As the teen was being held, his mom received several alarming calls from a Mexican phone number. The callers threatened to cut off parts of her son’s body if she failed to hand over the ransom money, which they demanded she deliver to Nogales, a city just across the Mexican border.
The teen was also forced to appear in videos, where he read from a script that accused his father of stealing from the suspects or their associates in New York. The kidnappers gradually reduced the ransom payment to $100,000.
Investigators triangulated the teen’s location by analyzing footage of the abduction captured by a nearby doorbell camera. They also uncovered a Facebook Marketplace listing for the kidnappers’ vehicle, which revealed that the suspects had only entered the U.S. the day before, NBC Los Angeles reported.
On Friday, when law enforcement arrived at the motel where the teen was being held, one of the three suspects allegedly threw a gun to the floor. The 17-year-old was found unharmed lying in the corner of the room.
Fidel Jesús Patino Jaimes, 22, Jair Tomás Ramos Domínguez, 26, and Ezequiel Felix López, 27, are expected to appear in United States District Court in Riverside on Monday to face federal kidnapping charges. If convicted, they each could be sentenced to life in prison.
