MEMPHIS, Tenn. – More evidence, new attorneys and new court dates.
On Tuesday, we learned new details in the upcoming federal trial against the former police officers accused of killing Tyre Nichols.
Attorneys said there’s more than 300 hours of video and audio they need to comb through, and it’s part of the reason attorneys asked to have the pre-trial motion deadline pushed back.
This was also the first court appearance for the four defendants Emmitt Martin III, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, and Tadarrius Bean, since their co-defendant, Desmond Mills Jr., changed his plea to guilty.
In early November, attorneys for Mills said he plans to cooperate in both the state and federal criminal cases, signing a plea agreement that changed the plea from not guilty to guilty in some charges.
attorney Bill Massey, who represents Martin, said the decision was a surprise, but the plan for his client is to keep the not guilty plea.
“We’re moving forward,” he said.
Massey also announced two additions to Martin’s defense team – Knoxville attorneys Stephen Ross Johnson and Catalina Goodwin.
“We’re here to prepare the case for trial, engage in the investigation that needs to be engaged in, engage in the pretrial motions, practice that needs to be conducted and to try the case. That’s what we’re preparing to do,” said Johnson.
There was also a new deadline set to file a pretrial motion, where attorneys will get to take a look at what the federal prosecutors have on their side.
“Basically, we have to know what the government’s proof is in order to know what pre-trial motions were to a part of it anyway. And so it was important to be able to go through as much of the discovery as possible before having trial following pre-trial motions,” said Massey.
That new date will be Jan. 8 2024.

Another decision was a deadline on Mar. 1 2024 for the jury questionnaire.
