COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The family of slain W.J. Keenan High School student Julian Keel met with their attorneys on Friday for a press conference to disclose potential lawsuits being brought forward over his tragic death.
Julian’s mom, Adrien Lake Watson says her son’s life was snatched away.
“If it’s the last thing that I do, I’m cleaning up this community. We are cleaning up these streets. These guns, these bullets are too readily available to children attempting to make adult decisions,” she says.
According to the Columbia Police Department, 16-year-old “Juju” Keel was shot while attending a graduation party at the 1400 block of Colonial Life Boulevard, later dying at a nearby hospital.
Columbia PD have charged 20-year-old Tonie Wilson with murder. A 16-year-old juvenile faces similar charges.
Police say following a beef between two groups, more than 50 rounds were fired at the party from at least four different guns.
Julian, an innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire.
“So before you get out there in these streets, before you start taking these guns and you start shooting recklessly and beefing over absolute nonsense, ask yourself how big a cell is. Ask yourself do you want your Mama crying on the front pew because you’re laying in a casket or crying because you’re in the courthouse because you are going to jail for life, you better ask yourself that question before you pull that trigger,” says Lake Watson.
His family and their attorneys Bakari Sellers and Pete Strom believe his death could have been avoided, had the premises been required to have proper security.
“What has to stop is people paying $100, $200 to have these big parties with absolutely no security, and these large businesses and corporations turn a blind eye, and while you have the blood that flows through their streets, they continue to reap the benefit. Without actually doing things that are necessary to safely secure those premises,” says Sellers.
Attorneys say the law firm intends to bring lawsuits forward.
“We do intend to pursue civil action against Unum and Colonial Life which own the premises where this occurred and against the venue that was having that event that night,” Sellers says.
Strom says they’ll also be looking into parental responsibility of all suspects involved.
Lake Watson has created a scholarship fund and go fund me, as well as a non-profit in honor of her son called “Julian’s Justice” as the search for additional suspects continues.
“If you know something in regards to this case with JuJu, if you know something say something,” she says, adding that tips made to Columbia PD can be anonymous if desired, or by calling 1-888-CRIME-SC.
