LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -During the recent special session on crime there was a lot of talk about juveniles. One such case is expected to go to trial a Monday, March 18 in 14th Judicial District Court.
It’s a second-degree murder trial in which the accused killer was only sixteen when it happened. Family members of the victim say the waiting for justice is difficult.
In November, it will be three years since the shooting of Jayden Ramirez. The 18-year-old was allegedly shot by his girlfriend who was sixteen at the time. The state has decided to try Emma ‘Lou Johnson as an adult.
Ramirez’ sister is Dallin Soileau, now nineteen, but she was seventeen when her brother died. Soileau was in the house when her brother was shot. He died three days later. Soileau is comforted by tattoos she bears to honor him such as his name on her arm.
“I like having it somewhere people can see. I like people asking, ‘Who was Jayden and I get to tell,” said Soileau.
333 is his time of death November 16th, 2021. Soileau feels the family is entitled to justice and she does think juveniles who kill people should be treated as adults.
“I believe at sixteen, obviously you’re not fully grown, but you know enough. You should know if you even pick up a handgun, you should know not to point it, wave it, do anything to harm anyone,” said Soileau. She has happy memories from their childhood together and is proud her brother was an organ donor.
“He actually saved seven lives,” said Soileau.
It’s a bench trial which means there is no jury and the judge decides the verdict. It’s expected to start next week.
We contacted defense attorney Adam Johnson who said he was unavailable to comment on Monday, when the story first aired.
However, he and co-defense attorney Todd Clemons say “The evidence will establish that it was an accidental shooting and that she did not have specific intent to kill.”
Also, court minutes of a preliminary hearing on August 8, 2022 say, “For oral reasons assigned, the Court does not find probable cause and orders the defendant released from bond obligation.”
The defense has also filed a motion to suppress Emma’Lou’s statements and arrest which is scheduled to be heard Monday. But Clemons says it may be withdrawn.
