RFK Jr. to name Nicole Shanahan as running mate in White House run: report

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to tap California attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan as his running mate, according to a report.

Shanahan, a Democratic donor who was once married to Google cofounder Sergey Brin, funded Kennedy’s pricey Super Bowl campaign commercial, Mediaite reported Saturday.

The pair “align on numerous issues,” including his condemnation of vaccines, and she can help funnel money into Kennedy’s long-shot bid and get him on ballots in all 50 states, sources close to the campaign told the outlet.

The pick notably keeps New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whom Kennedy said was considering as his Vice President, off the November ballot.

Kennedy’s campaign declined to confirm that he’s made a decision.

“There has been a lot of speculation in the media about Mr. Kennedy’s pick of vice presidential running mate,” his campaign’s press office told The Post in a statement.

“The official announcement will be on March 26 in Oakland, CA. We hope to see you there.”

Shanahan, 38, told The New York Times last month she had given $4 million to the super PAC, American Values 2024, to fund the $7 million 30-second Super Bowl commercial.

While claimnig to not be an “anti-vaxxer,” she said she shared Kennedy’s constant attacks on vaccines. She also describes herself as a progressive who cares about children’s health.

She donated to President Biden’s campaign in 2020 and gave the maximum $6,600 to Kennedy’s campaign in May 2023 while he was still seeking the Democratic nomination, according to records obtained by The Times.

The Bay Area attorney was married to Google’s Brin in 2018 — but they officially divorced last summer after she was reportedly romantically involved with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Musk and Brin were previously longtime friends, and Musk frequently stayed over at Brin’s home, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2022.

However, the two reportedly had a falling out following Musk and Shanahan’s brief fling in December 2021, when Brin requested that his financial advisers sell his personal investments in Musk’s companies.

Musk and Shanahan have denied the allegations.

“This is total bs,” Musk posted on X in July 2022, in response to a user who shared the WSJ article.

“I’ve only seen Nicole twice in three years, both times with many other people around. Nothing romantic,” he added.

Brin filed for a dissolution of marriage from Shanahan in January 2022. The couple shares a young daughter together, according to People.

Kennedy initially ran as a Democrat against President Biden before announcing an independent bid in October. He has been polling as the top third party candidate in the field, consistently cracking double-digits behind President Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Others on Kennedy’s short list included former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, who, along with Rodgers, was “at the top of his list,” he told the New York Times this week.

Kennedy has been working to secure funding to get on the ballot in every state as an independent, which his campaign says it will cost them $15 million. So far, he’s only qualified for the ballot in four states: Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire and Utah.

Los Angeles DA George Gascon faces 11 primary challengers

Soft-on-crime Los Angeles County District attorney George Gascon faces a full field of primary challengers on Tuesday after dodging two previous recall attempts aimed at ousting him over his progressive prosecutorial policies.

Eleven candidates — including several of Gascon’s current and former deputies — are competing with the incumbent to be LA’s top law-and-order enforcer in an open-primary race that is expected to lead to a runoff election between the top two vote-getters in November.

Gascon survived one recall effort within his first 100 days in office and a second in 2022, when organizers narrowly missed collecting the necessary signatures to trigger a special election to oust him.

The left-wing prosecutor won election in 2020 on a criminal justice reform pledge following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis — but critics say his policies have enabled violent and repeat offenders to evade justice.

Those policies include decisions to abolish cash bail, to not prosecute juvenile offenders as adults, to lighten sentencing guidelines for gang members and to retry cases involving prisoners convicted of both serious felonies or non-violent crimes — all with the help of career public defenders he hired.

Gascon is one of many progressive prosecutors backed by liberal billionaire George Soros, receiving more than $6 million from his dark money network, according to the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund.

Los Angeles in October was dubbed the number one city for organized retail theft for the fifth year in a row, according to a report from the National Retail Foundation, amounting to $18.2 billion in losses.

Violent crime decreased slightly by 3.2% last year, while homicides dropped by 17% after reaching a 15-year high in 2022.

A January California Elections and Policy poll found a majority (51%) of Los Angeles voters disapprove of Gascon’s job performance, but he still leads the other candidates by a slight plurality, with 15% support.

Jonathan Hatami, a child abuse prosecutor who worked under Gascon, and former federal prosecutors Nathan Hochman — a 2022 GOP candidate for California attorney general — and Jeff Chemerinsky all showed single-digit support.

They were followed by Maria Ramirez, another Gascon subordinate who sued her boss ahead of the 2022 recall effort, along with Craig Mitchell, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge whose term ends in January 2025.

“By prosecuting criminals & following the law, which is really our main job, the DA holds wrongdoers accountable, helps ensure that justice is served, deters future criminal behavior & victimization, and promotes a sense & feeling of safety & security within our community,” Hatami said on X Monday.

“The DA also significantly impacts the lives of victims and their families by providing justice, closure and a small sense that survivors and their lost loved ones were heard and mattered,” he added.

“George Gascón never ran or campaigned on any of that. In his first two years, he didn’t even mention those ideals. He’s also never once been an actual prosecutor, so I also think he just doesn’t believe in any of that. Unlike Gascón, I do.”

Eric Siddall, yet another prosecutor who served under Gascon and is in the running, said the DA never prosecuted a case in court before his election and “continues making politically motivated prosecutions where he puts ideology ahead of evidence, and his personal preferences ahead of the law, leading to a staggering number of defeats in the courtroom.”

“This ideology-driven incompetence doesn’t just cost taxpayers money — it also diverts valuable personnel away from taking on important cases to put violent criminals behind bars and keep our community safe — instead sending them on wild goose chases that can’t be won,” Siddall said on X last week.

It could be days before the top two vote-getters are known. Polls will remain open until 11 p.m. ET, while mail-in ballots will be accepted from registered voters through March 12.

California biker bar shooting leaves 5 dead, 6 injured

A gunman who killed three people and wounded five others inside a popular biker bar in Orange County, California, Wednesday night was a former police officer.

John Snowling, who retired nearly a decade ago as a sergeant, was identified as the shooter by officials with the Ventura Police Department, where he worked for 27 years.

“Our hearts weigh heavy with the distressing incident at Cook’s Corner,” said Ventura PD Chief Darin Schindler in a statement. “Our deepest condolences are with the families of the victims, the survivors and the Orange County deputies who swiftly responded to the scene. This incident deeply affects us all.”

Snowling targeted his estranged wife, Marie, who was shot in the lower jaw, according to the Orange County Register.

Marie Snowling filed for divorce in December 2022, according to court records viewed by The Post.

Her father, William Mosby, told the Orange County Register his estranged son-in-law was a “crazy husband” who couldn’t deal with the divorce. Mosby said his daughter was alive and was rushed to UCI Medical Center.

The mayhem began shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday as a domestic dispute between Snowling and his wife inside the bar, Orange County Sheriff’s officials said.

He allegedly shot his wife and another seven people, including a cook, Orange County Sheriff’s officials said.

Six people, including five with gunshot wounds, were hospitalized, authorities said.

Two were critically injured, with one shot in the chest.

The chef who was shot in the arm will undergo surgery on Thursday.

Three other men with minor injuries were treated and released Wednesday night, Mission Hospital officials said.

Two of them were critically injured, while the other four were listed in stable condition.

Deputies shot Snowling outside the bar as he was heading to his truck, apparently to reload, according to a witness.

Another witness, whose friend was shot in the back as they ran from the gunfire and is believed to be among the dead, told KCAL that they first heard five to six shots from inside the bar and then a pause followed by a barrage of additional gunshots.

He told the station he initially thought his friend had tripped.

He said he hid in the bar’s kitchen with a chef who was shot in the arm.

No deputies were injured during the shooting.

Investigators recovered one firearm from the scene.

Locals said the historic bar, which opened in 1926, was likely packed at the time of the gunfire as patrons came for its unlimited spaghetti night and a live band.

Undersheriff Jeff Hallock described the watering hole as “a beloved part” of the community.

FBI agents are helping with the investigation.

An 18-year-old from California who passed the state’s bar exam when he was only 17 is now working as a practising attorney. The Tulare County District attorney‘s office announced Peter Park’s record-breaking achievement in a Facebook post, saying that it was a “legal history-making moment”. Notably, Mr Park passed the state’s bar exam on his first attempt when he was 17, beating the previous record held by an 18-year-old. He has been a law clerk with the office since August after completing law school.

“In a legal history making moment, Tulare County District attorney law clerk Peter Park passed the rigorous California bar exam on his first attempt making him the youngest person to ever pass the exam at age 17. According to research, the previous record holder was 18 years old. Park received his test results on November 9 after taking the exam in July,” the Facebook post read.

According to the caption of the post, Mr Park started high school in 2019 at age 13 and at the same time enrolled in a four-year law program at Northwestern California University School of Law. He was able to enrol due to a state bar rule allowing students to apply to law school after completing the College Level Proficiency Exams.

Mr Park completed high school in 2021 and graduated from law school in 2023, as per the post. He then passed the state’s bar exam on his first attempt when he was 17 and then went to work for the district attorney‘s office.

“It was not easy, but it was worth it. It required discipline and strategy to pass the Bar, and I made it in the end. I am extremely blessed to have discovered this path, and my hope is that more people will realize that alternative paths exist to becoming an attorney,” Mr Park said.

“I aspire to become a prosecutor because I am driven by a moral obligation to uphold liberty, equality, and justice in society. I admire how prosecutors keep our community safe and bring closure to victims,” he added.

According to The Guardian, Peter Park was officially sworn in as a practising attorney last week. With this, he has become one of the state’s youngest practising attorneys.
