Tesla agrees to $1.5M settlement over improper disposal of hazardous waste

A group of 25 California district attorneys this week announced a $1.5 million civil settlement with Tesla Inc. over allegations that the electric carmaker improperly disposed of hazardous waste at several facilities around the state.

The settlement is the culmination of a nearly six-year-long investigation, initiated by the San Francisco District attorney‘s Office’s Environmental Division and joined by prosecutors in counties where the company has business locations.

“While electric vehicles may benefit the environment, the manufacturing and servicing of these vehicles still generates many harmful waste streams,” District attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement Thursday. “Today’s settlement against Tesla, Inc. serves to provide a cleaner environment for citizens throughout the state by preventing the contamination of our precious natural resources when hazardous waste is mismanaged and unlawfully disposed.”

The suit, filed in San Joaquin County, followed the discovery of the alleged illegal disposal of several types of hazardous waste—including lubricants, brake cleaners, batteries, paint and other contaminants—at Tesla’s electric car service centers, solar energy centers and its electric vehicle factory in Fremont.

“Although Tesla denied any wrongdoing, this settlement and the injunction imposed on it ensures the company will follow environmental laws,” said Alameda County District attorney Pamela Price. “I am happy that Tesla was willing to work closely with investigators from our Consumer Justice Bureau and took steps early on at its Fremont manufacturing plant to prevent any more hazardous automotive or manufacturing waste from going into landfills.”

On top of the $1.5 million payment, Tesla also agreed to properly train its employees on hazardous waste control laws and to hire a consultant to conduct annual inspections at 10 percent of its California facilities, including the Fremont plant, over the next five years.

In addition to San Francisco and Alameda counties’ district attorneys, Bay Area prosecutors from Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma signed on to the suit, as well, along with the Monterey County District attorney‘s Office.

Officials from Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

San Diego man pleads not guilty for Riverside County luxury car theft scheme

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) — A San Diego man is facing multiple charges in connection to a multi-million dollar scheme involving the theft of luxury cars throughout Riverside County.

On Thursday, 47-year-old Dean Watters of San Diego pleaded not guilty to 12 felonies with charges including embezzlement, car theft and buying or receiving stolen vehicles, a release sent by the Riverside District attorney‘s Office said.

Riverside County’s Deputy District attorney filed a second amended complaint on Thursday for 25-year-old Kendall Jamison Clark of Murrieta. The release said the complaint now has 30 felony charges for Clark following the discovery and recovery of additional stolen cars.

Some of the cars that Clark took were a 2021 Porsche Boxter, a 2021 Lamborghini Aventador, a 2022 Tesla Model Y and a 2022 Lamborghini Urus.

Riverside Auto-Theft Interdiction Detail (RAID) investigators initiated their investigations in September, following reports from several luxury car owners who reported that Clark never returned their vehicles.

When the owners tried to report their cars as stolen, they learned their names were taken off the titles, the release said.

Clark was arrested in San Diego on Oct. 18. Following his arrest, investigators found Watters purchasing the vehicles that Clark stole at various locations throughout Riverside County for prices lower than their actual value.

The release said Watters paid Clark for a group of cars and took them to other locations, including Mexico, where he attempted to resell them. RAID members arrested Watters at the San Diego International Airport on Nov. 27, where he tried to depart to San Francisco.

Watters has a return date for a felony settlement conference and bail review on Dec. 8 and is held on $1 million bail at the Southwest Detention Center.

Clark pleaded not guilty to all charges prior and was released from custody on $250,000 bail. His return date is Dec. 14 for a felony settlement conference at the Southwest Justice Center.

Women attacked by road rage driver believe constitutional rights were violated – NBC Los Angeles

Four women have come forward demanding better protection after they were not informed of their attacker’s sentencing by the Los Angeles District attorney‘s Office.

In a press conference organized by attorney Gloria Allred, the women who were attacked claim they were denied their constitutional rights in the criminal justice system under Marsy’s Law.

“I am here with many, with hope of positive changes to this system, to request more support from law enforcement by offering us all the information we are entitled to, and to demand a better approach that prioritizes the rights and needs of victims of crime,” said Beth Lamprecht, one of the women who spoke out at the press conference.

The attacker, Nathanial Ratimak, was responsible for a string of road rage incidents including one on the 2 Freeway in Glendale where he with got out of his Tesla and attacked another car with a metal pipe.

The road rage incidents date back nearly 20 years across eight states.

Ratimak was convicted of several felony counts including criminal threats, assault and elder abuse. He was sentenced to five years in prison in a plea deal which the women say they were not informed of either.

“This experience has left me in a complete state of panic and worried to even step outside. It has changed my life drastically, making it hard to do daily tasks without worry. I am constantly reaching for my purse to make sure I have my pepper spray in hand,” said Grecia Palma.

The women say they have lost all trust and confidence in the judicial system and hope to see reform for victim’s rights in the future.

NBC4 reached out to the District attorney‘s Office for comment, but has not heard back.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The man who allegedly carried out a series of violent road-rage attacks across Southern California allegedly had steroids and more than $30,000 when his vehicle was searched after an incident in 2020, according to the District attorney‘s Office.

Nathaniel Walter Radimak, 36, made his first appearance in court Tuesday, pleading not guilty to complaints from 12 people claiming he attacked them in their vehicles, and new details were released by the Los Angeles District attorney‘s Office on its investigation.

He was charged with four counts each of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and criminal threats, along with one felony count of vandalism, according to the Los Angeles County District attorney‘s Office.

He’s also charged with two misdemeanor counts of vandalism and one misdemeanor count of elder abuse. He pled not guilty to all charges.

A Los Angeles judge did not allow Eyewitness News to film Radimak in court on Tuesday, saying there may be more victims that need to identify him.

Radimak — who is due back in court Feb. 14 — was ordered to remain jailed at the request of the prosecution, which cited a lengthy criminal history that spans nearly two decades and crosses multiple states and jurisdictions, according to the District attorney‘s Office.

“The defendant’s criminal record going back to 2004, almost 20 years, and in 20 years, eight different states were affected by defendant’s criminal conduct,” said the judge.

Ten people have reached out to Eyewitness News saying Radimak violently attacked them in cities across L.A. County, most of the whom are women.

He already has a pending case in which he is charged with a misdemeanor count of battery and a felony count of possession for sale of a controlled substance in connection with an alleged January 2020 road-rage attack on a motorist in Hollywood, according to the District attorney‘s Office.

He allegedly had steroids and thousands of dollars when his vehicle was searched, the DA said.

The latest case stems from a series of alleged attacks dating back to last June when Radimak is accused of threatening to assault a 74-year-old woman outside a doctor’s office in Glendale, according to the District attorney‘s Office.

He is also accused of threatening to attack a woman at a storage facility in Atwater Village last Nov. 9, and allegedly getting out of his vehicle later that day to threaten another woman on a freeway and break one of her headlights, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors also allege that Radimak used a pipe to strike someone’s car on the 2 Freeway on Jan. 11, and that he allegedly nearly struck a couple’s vehicle with his car and then struck it with a metal pole after following them from a shopping mall in Pasadena the same day.

Radimark was taken into custody in Torrance about 3 p.m. Sunday by members of the California Highway Patrol’s Southern Division Major Crimes Unit.

“The assaults were captured on a dash-cam video and several leads were provided to our department by the public which led to the arrest,” theCHP reported.

In a statement, District attorney George Gascón said, “The victims in this case were reasonably terrified by what they experienced, but this reign of terror ends today. Motorists in Los Angeles shouldn’t have to live in fear of being attacked while simply driving on the freeway.”

The case remains under investigation by the CHP and the Los Angeles and Pasadena police departments, according to the District attorney‘s Office.

Suspect Arrested in LA Tesla Road Rage Confrontations – NBC Los Angeles

A man sought in connection with a series of road rage encounters, including a violent freeway confrontation caught on camera in Glendale, is under arrest, police said Monday.

The suspect, identified by police as 36-year-old Nathaniel Radimak, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Sunday by the California Highway Patrol. He is being held on $5 million bond.

Details about the arrest were not immediately available. It was not immediately clear whether Radimak has an attorney.

“The assaults were captured on a dash-cam video and several leads were provided to our department by the public which led to the arrest,” the California Highway Patrol said in a statement.

The series of Jan. 11 road rage incidents included a confrontation earlier on the 2 Freeway in Glendale. A Tesla driver can be seen cutting in front of another driver, then slamming on his brakes and stopping on the busy freeway northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The video showed a partially masked Tesla driver holding what appeared to be a pipe or stick as he got out of the car and charged toward the driver’s side door.

The man who recorded the video said the attacker struck his window several times with the object.

Other drivers reported assaults the same day, the CHP said.
