A former Orange County youth pastor who worked at a popular megachurch was charged with allegedly molesting four teenage boys.

Ruven Meulenberg, 39, mentored junior-high-aged children at Saddleback Church, a popular evangelical Christian megachurch in Lake Forest. Meulenberg and his twin brother were also featured on a YouTube channel dedicated to gaming and music production.

In May 2017, Meulenberg was arrested for allegedly engaging in lewd conduct and an inappropriate relationship with two 14-year-old twin boys. The incidents took place between May 2016 and May 2017 while at a movie theater and inside the pastor’s car, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

At the time of the alleged abuse, one of the victims regularly attended the church and was part of its Junior High Ministry program, which is “designed specifically to help 7th-8th graders connect with Jesus, each other and a caring adult,” according to Saddleback Church.

In a 2018 trial, prosecutors described some of the sexual abuse saying the boys were sitting with Meulenberg in a darkened movie theater when he prompted one of them to sit on his lap, the Orange County Register reported.

Meulenberg allegedly kissed the boy twice — once on his head, another time on the cheek — before kissing him on the lips, prosecutors said.

Meulenberg tried to get the teen to kiss him, asking him to do so, but the victim told him he didn’t feel comfortable doing that. Afterward, Meulenberg told the boy to switch seats with his brother. He then repeated the same illicit behavior with the other boy, officials said.

When the boys returned home, they reported the sexual abuse to their mother.

Meulenberg was convicted of molestation in 2018 before the conviction was overturned when a judge ruled one of the jurors had engaged in misconduct by sharing information with other jurors about the psychiatric testing of subjects in criminal trials.

A new trial where Meulenberg will face the same charges for his alleged abuse of the twins will be held, but has yet to be scheduled.

While awaiting that trial, a third victim, a 13-year-old boy, came forward saying he met the suspect at church and was invited to the movies and dinner with him between August 2016 and September 2017. On one or more occasions, Meulenberg allegedly molested the boy while hanging out with him privately, court documents said.

Meulenberg was charged with four felony counts of a lewd act on a child under the age of 14 in that case. 

After those charges were filed, a fourth victim told authorities that he had been touched inappropriately by Meulenberg between June 2017 and June 2018 while the pastor drove him home from a church event. He was 14 at the time.

A charge of one felony count of a lewd act upon a child 14 or 15 years old who is at least 10 years younger than the suspect was filed in that case.

Saddleback Church is one of the largest churches in the U.S., with a weekly attendance of around 28,000, according to the O.C. Register.

Because Meulenberg worked at the church for years and his leadership role provided access to children, investigators believe there could be additional victims.

“Strong mentors are meant to help our children navigate the difficulties of growing up and realize their full potential,” said O.C. District attorney Todd Spitzer. “Instead of providing the spiritual guidance he pretended to provide, this youth pastor seized on the vulnerabilities of these children for his own sick sexual gratification. He has not only forever shaken their belief in anyone in a position of trust and authority; he has irreparably damaged their faith and the faith of countless other parishioners who believed their children were safe with him and youth pastors everywhere.”

If convicted on all charges, Meulenberg could face up to life in prison, prosecutors said. He was released and remains on GPS monitoring while awaiting trial on both criminal cases.

After a weeklong manhunt, a dangerous convicted felon who walked away from a halfway house in Orange County was captured in Mexico.

The man was identified as Ike Souzer, 20, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

At the time of his escape, authorities said Souzer was considered “extremely dangerous and violent” and should not be approached.

On March 20, Souzer was released from custody after pleading guilty to felony vandalism. He was sentenced to 90 days in county jail and placed on probation for two years afterward.

He checked into a halfway house that day, called Project Kinship in Santa Ana, but left the premises and never returned. He did not notify his probation officer of where he may have been headed.

On March 27, Souzer was located in Rosarito, Mexico where he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexican officials.

When he was initially released to the halfway house on vandalism charges, prosecutors had “strongly objected to the 90-day credit time served sentence” due to Souzer’s criminal history.

Souzer had stabbed his mother to death when he was 13 years old, attacked three correctional officers, and manufactured a shank while being housed at the Orange County Jail, according to the DA’s office.

In 2021, over prosecutors’ objections, O.C. Superior Court Judge Gary Pohlson reduced felony charges to misdemeanors and gave Souzer 160 days of credit time served for attacking three correctional officers while he was incarcerated.

In October 2023, prosecutors objected to a three-year split sentence after Souzer was convicted of making and possessing a shank in jail.

Instead of the three years in custody sentence prosecutors argued for, Souzer was sentenced to one year of custody time and two years of supervised release. With 50 percent good time/work time credit, he was released from custody three months later in January 2024.

Just days after his release, Souzer was arrested by the Orange Police Department for spray painting graffiti on an underpass underneath the 55 freeway while giving officers a false name.

Souzer had previously walked away from Project Kinship in April 2022, after being released on electronic monitoring from jail. 

After a countywide manhunt during that incident, he was eventually located and arrested at a homeless encampment in Anaheim.

“My prosecutors have spent years and years trying to do everything they can to keep this violent criminal behind bars, and at every turn, the very judges who are elected to protect public safety have done little to do so and instead have given him break after break after break,” said O.C. District attorney Todd Spitzer. “This is not someone who deserves a break; he has turned every opportunity to turn over a new leaf into a new opportunity to break the law and defy law enforcement. He did not simply walk away and forget to check in with his probation officer. The second he was out of custody he set a plan in motion to flee to a foreign country in yet another attempt to escape the consequences of his actions.”

An Orange County doctor was sentenced Friday for murdering his wife in a staged accident.

In December 2023, Eric Scott Sills, 58, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Susann Sills, 45, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

On Nov. 13, 2016, Eric called 911 and said he awoke to find Susann’s lifeless body after she had allegedly fallen down the stairs. 

Homicide detectives arrived at the scene where Susann was pronounced dead. The Orange County Coroner later determined her death was a homicide.

Prosecutors said the injuries found on Susann’s face and neck didn’t match up to the claim that she had died by falling down the stairs. Evidence presented at Eric’s trial showed that his wife died from strangulation. 

Blood stains were found on their daughter’s bedroom wall and curtains where Susann was sleeping that night due to a migraine.

“A clump of her hair also was found in the room, indicating that there had been a violent struggle between the couple,” court documents said.

The couple’s son told investigators he was woken up that morning to the sound of his parents arguing in another room, the O.C. Register reports. Investigators said Eric appeared detached during the 911 call to report his wife’s death.

The couple was married for more than 10 years and worked together at a Carlsbad fertility clinic called Center for Advanced Genetics. Eric was the medical director and Susann, who was the co-founder, ran the business side of the clinic. The family lived in an upscale San Clemente neighborhood.

They had twins, a boy and a girl, who were 12 years old at the time of Susann’s death.

The motive behind the murder remains unclear, although the O.C. Register reports there was allegedly evidence of marital issues including a text to her husband saying that she “wants out,” the prosecutor said.

“She is frustrated, upset, feels trapped and feels like he is killing her,” Senior Deputy District attorney Jennifer Walker told jurors. “She tells him in these texts, ‘You are killing me, don’t you see?’”

Prosecutors also alleged Eric may have been upset about a topless photo Susann reportedly posted of herself in a chat room after losing a bet.

At one point, Eric’s attorney argued that Susann’s medication to treat her migraines impacted her balance that night, which caused her to fall down the stairs and suffer a spinal injury that left her unable to breathe, the O.C. Register reports.

However, evidence from the coroner’s office concluded Susann had died of strangulation.

On March 15, Eric was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. 

“Mr. Sills not only killed his wife but he went one step further and tried to cover up his horrific crime,” said O.C. District attorney Todd Spitzer. “His actions have irreparably torn apart his family as his children have to grapple with the immeasurable pain of losing their mother at the hands of their father. This was the ultimate betrayal by their father and now he will spend his remaining days in state prison.”

An Orange County man already convicted of impersonating a doctor to perform cosmetic procedures is facing similar charges again after “attempting to start another Botox and thread lift business less than two weeks after he was released from prison,” according to the O.C. District attorney’s Office.

Elias Renteria Segoviano, 63, admitted to 15 felonies in April 2023: 13 counts of unauthorized practice of medicine, one count of false indication of a medical license and one count of perjury, the OCDA said in a news release.

Prosecutors say Segoviano targeted Spanish-speaking women and used multiple variations of his name to avoid detection by authorities.

Victims who spoke with KTLA said they encountered issues like problems blinking and a collapsing eyebrow after paying Segoviano thousands.

“I’m embarrassed. I don’t go out anymore, I don’t see my friends anymore. I was prettier before I walked in his office and now I’m fighting to get my old looks back,” said a woman who asked to only be identified as Monica.

He was released from state prison on Dec. 22, 2023, but less than two weeks later, he tried to sublet a business location in Brea and applied for a business license, prosecutors said.

“Segoviano is accused of providing the two suite owners with a fake name and stating that he performs Botox injections and face thread lifting procedures, both of which require valid medical authorizations which Segoviano doesn’t have,” the release said.

Now, he faces two felony counts of unauthorized practice of medicine and a misdemeanor count of falsely representing himself as a licensed medical practitioner.

“This man walked the walk and talked the talk of being a licensed medical professional, but he was anything but what he pretended to be,” District attorney Todd Spitzer said in the release. “These women trusted this individual to have the training and the expertise required to perform these medical procedures, and instead they unknowingly put their very lives in the hands of someone who was never licensed to perform the kind of work he was doing. The fact that he was out of prison less than two weeks – and while under supervision – when he returned right back to a life of crime makes it painfully obvious that he has no intention of changing his behavior and he will continue to try to make money off unsuspecting women every chance that he gets.”

A man faces up to life in prison after stabbing a pedestrian to death during a robbery in Tustin.

Miguel Angel Orellana, 23, of Anaheim was sentenced Friday from 25 years to life in state prison for the murder of David Nakaki, 62, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

On Dec. 9, 2019, Nakaki was walking around his neighborhood near the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Norwood Park Place after returning home from work at around 8:45 p.m.

Orellana, who was a passenger inside a car being driven by his girlfriend, spotted the victim and got out of his vehicle. He approached Nakaki and demanded money from him.

When the victim said he didn’t have any money on him, Orellana stabbed him before getting back into his car and speeding away, officials said.

Tustin police responded to the scene and found Nakaki suffering from a single stab wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

After several weeks of investigation, Orellana and his girlfriend, Erika Pineda, 25, were arrested as suspects.

Orellana pleaded guilty to one felony count of first-degree murder and admitted the special allegation that he used a knife during the commission of the crime, according to the DA’s office.

Pineda who was driving the vehicle at the time of the murder was charged with one felony count of conspiracy to commit a robbery and one felony count of accessory after the fact.

She faces a possible maximum sentence of five years and eight months in prison and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on April 19.

“A man who was simply out for a nighttime walk in his own neighborhood was callously murdered when he said he left his wallet at home,” said Orange County District attorney Todd Spitzer. “This is as cold-hearted and ruthless as a homicide case can be. Instead of walking away, this defendant decided to take someone’s life and leave a family with a lifetime of grief and mourning because of a reckless act.”

An Orange County nanny was convicted Tuesday of molesting 16 young boys and showing pornography to a 17th boy while they were under his care.

Matthew Antonio Zakrzewski, 34, of Costa Mesa, was convicted by a jury of 34 felony counts, including lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 14, oral copulation of a child under the age of 10, possession of child pornography, using a minor for sex acts, and more.

Zakrzewski had worked as a nanny for many families across Southern California. His victims ranged in age from 2 to 12 years old, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

The crimes were committed between Jan. 1, 2014 and May 17, 2019. He filmed many of the sexual assaults on the boys as well, officials said.

In May 2019, a Laguna Beach couple reported to police that their babysitter, Zakrzewski, had inappropriately touched their 8-year-old son. They were concerned for their child’s safety and potentially other children.

The couple had hired Zakrzewski to care for their son through one of his several babysitting websites.

Laguna Beach police opened an investigation which led to the discovery of a second victim, a 7-year-old boy in L.A., along with 10 more boys across Southern California.

Zakrzewski called himself “the original Sitter Buddy” on his website, describing himself as a “manny” who provided a variety of babysitting services, including mentorships, big brother relationships along with overnight and vacation babysitting.

“In the eighth grade, I discovered what a joy it was to work with children and be a positive impact in their lives through my school’s `Buddy Program,’” Zakrzewski wrote on his Sitter Buddy website. “Now, I am a full-service TrustLine Certified provider of regular and on-demand childcare, as well as mentoring services for children.”

He was arrested on May 17, 2019, by Laguna Beach detectives at a local airport after deplaning an international flight.

He faces 690 years to life, plus eight additional years. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 17 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Orange County District attorney Todd Spitzer released a statement saying:

“These young boys were forced to endure unimaginable terror as a result of the ultimate betrayal by a babysitter. These parents thought they were hiring a trusted caregiver for their children while they went on family vacations, date nights, and for other childcare needs; instead they were unknowingly letting a monster walk into their homes and prey upon their innocent children in the vilest way.

I am incredibly proud of the young victims who bravely took the stand to testify against their abuser, the parents who were by their side every step of the way, and the parents who testified themselves. By standing up to this predator and telling the truth about what he did, they are ensuring that the voices of the victims of sexual assault are being heard while they are protecting other children from being victimized.”

Zakrzewski was ultimately charged with 34 felony counts including:
-27 felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 14
-Two felony counts of oral copulation of a child under the age of 10
-One felony count of possession of child pornography
-One felony count of using a minor for sex acts
-Two felony counts of distributing pornography to a minor for the purpose of engaging in sexual conduct
-One felony count of an attempted lewd or lascivious act with a minor under the age of 14

A man has been charged with threatening a mass shooting at an Orange County courthouse.

Byrom Zuniga Sanchez allegedly sent emails with the subject line “active shooter – Lamoreaux Justice Center” that promised an attack next Friday, Oct. 13, as “I like to make moments feel special, and unforgettable,” according to the criminal complaint filed against him Thursday.

One email included the following threats directed at a judge, according to the complaint.

• “I am more committed to murdering you than I am to being present as a father. Nothing will change course and nothing will stop the guaranteed accountability requiring your life as payment.”
• “Nothing can save you, and nothing can protect you. Pelosi’s husband got hammered in the presence of police. What makes you think anyone is going to spare your life?”
• “You’re already dead. The remainder of my life will be dedicated to assassinating judges, attorneys, and a police station’s entire shift staff.”

The incident was first reported by Seamus Hughes’ Court Watch, which pointed out previous criminal incidents involving Sanchez.

“In 2021, Sanchez allegedly went to the house of the Orange County district attorney (DA) and talked with an individual at his residence. When the DA was not there, Sanchez allegedly then said ‘Tell him Byrom stopped by,’” Hughes wrote. “A few months prior, prosecutors say Sanchez came to the DA’s office and ‘made a scene of dancing and singing erratically, and demanded to speak with the Orange County District attorney.’”

In 2022, he also reportedly led Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies in a pursuit that ended at a Foothill Ranch In-N-Out.

An Orange County nanny was sentenced Friday for molesting 16 young boys and showing pornography to a 17th boy while they were under his care.

Matthew Antonio Zakrzewski, 34, of Costa Mesa, faces 705 years to life plus two years and eight months in prison, according to the Orange County District attorney’s Office.

He was convicted on Oct. 3 by a jury of 34 felony counts, including lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under the age of 14, oral copulation of a child under the age of 10, possession of child pornography, using a minor for sex acts, and more.

Zakrzewski had worked as a nanny for many families across Southern California. His victims ranged in age from 2 to 12 years old, the DA’s office said.

The crimes were committed between Jan. 1, 2014 and May 17, 2019. He filmed many of the sexual assaults on the boys as well.

Through victim impact statements in court on Friday, parents of the victimized boys expressed their outrage at Zakrzewski, comparing him to “an animal they blamed themselves for letting into their homes,” court documents said.

In a statement to the court, Zakrzewski never apologized, officials said.

“I prided myself on bringing smiles to your children and all the good times we shared were 100 percent genuine,” he stated as, “several parents covered their ears and wept as he spoke,” according to court documents.

These innocent little boys must bear a lifetime of trauma, and their parents will bear a lifetime of pain knowing that they put their precious children in the arms of an animal because they believed who he said he was. We cannot undo the trauma inflicted so unnecessarily on these children, but we can do everything we can to help support these families as they try to put back together the broken pieces of their children.”

A judge in Orange County is deciding whether a mentally ill patient who killed a woman after a traffic collision in Seal Beach should be released.

In 1994, Leonard Patton, then 29, took a flight from Minnesota to Southern California. When he landed, he rented a car. While driving on Pacific Coast Highway, he got into a minor traffic accident with Jessica Uniack, 47, at around 9:45 a.m.

When the two stopped to exchange information, Patton attacked and bludgeoned Uniack to death, police said.

Patton then left his rented car at the scene and drove the victim’s car to Irvine Medical Center, where he abandoned the vehicle with Uniack inside, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Uniack’s battered body was found under a pile of blankets and clothes in the passenger seat. She was on her way to deliver homemade cookies to a friend when the collision with Patton occurred.

He was arrested later that night after being spotted by a driver walking along Newport Coast Drive.

During court hearings, family members said Patton had a history of mental illness and paranoia. He allegedly heard voices in his head telling him to travel. They told prosecutors they had tried to commit Patton to a mental institution a few years prior to Uniack’s death, but were unsuccessful.

Patton was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but his family said he had failed to take medication as prescribed. About six months before the attack, loved ones said his behavior had changed drastically. Usually calm, they said he began having tantrums and fits of rage.

In Uniack’s case, Patton was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sentenced to life in a state mental hospital.

Representatives and caregivers of Patton, now 58 years old, say he is well enough to be given a conditional release back into the community.

The Orange County District attorney’s Office, however, is fighting the recommendation as Patton was already given a conditional release in 2006.

He was re-entered into a facility after he violated the terms of his release several times. He was found to have possessed multiple dangerous items including multi-tools with knife blades and with other sharp objects, officials said.

“The fact that he’s a repeat violator is something of great concern to us,” said Orange County District attorney Todd Spitzer. “Again, I’m asking the Legislature and the Governor to put the appropriate resources into our state mental facilities where we should properly house these individuals and keep them away from society. I don’t know why we would risk releasing the mentally ill back into society when they’re killers.”

Thursday’s hearing at the Orange County Courthouse ended with no final decision made. The proceedings are expected to resume in October.
