Attorneys File Claim in Death of Keenan Anderson – NBC Los Angeles

Attorneys for the family of 31-year-old father and English teacher who died in Los Angeles Police Department custody after he was repeatedly shocked with a stun gun announced plans to file a $50 million claim in the case.

Members of Keenan Anderson’s family joined attorneys Benjamin Crump and Carl Douglas at a Thursday news conference to announce the claim for damages. The wrongful death claim is a precursor to the filing of a lawsuit.

Anderson, the father of a 6-year-old child, was shocked repeatedly with a stun gun during a struggle with officers in Venice after a crash Jan. 3. The department later said he attempted to carjack somebody and then caused a crash.

Police said paramedics arrived about a minute later and rendered aid to Anderson. About five minutes later, the department said, paramedics took Anderson to a hospital, where he died from cardiac arrest some 4-and-a-half hours after being shocked by the Taser.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said that the investigation into Anderson’s death was ongoing, but noted Anderson was shocked six times during the struggle with officers.

“In my preliminary review of this incident, it’s unclear what the role of that Taser was,” Moore said. “To be clear, it’s dependent on the totality of our investigative resources, but also on medical records from the hospital as well as a coroner’s report and their formal and forensic level examination. As this investigation continues, however, I will pay close attention to the use of the Taser.”

Anderson, a cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, most recently taught at Digital Pioneers Academy, a charter school in Washington, D.C. He was in Los Angeles visiting relatives during the holidays.

“He also deserves to be hugging his son, but instead his son is left fatherless because of a chance encounter with LAPD taking Keenan’s life,” said Dominique Anderson, his younger sister. “And our family is left to pick up those pieces. Keenan was not a threat to any of those officers on that day.”

The series of events began when someone flagged down a motorcycle officer about the crash near Venice and Lincoln boulevards. The officer saw Anderson running in the street, and several witnesses indicated that he caused the crash, police said.

The officer spoke with Anderson for several minutes near the intersection, police said. Anderson attempted to leave the scene as more officers arrived, the LAPD said.

“As officers contacted Anderson, he began to resist, resulting in a use of force,” the LAPD said in post that included video of the encounter. “Officers struggled with Anderson for several minutes, utilizing a TASER, bodyweight, firm grips, and joint locks to overcome his resistance.

“Anderson was subsequently handcuffed and hobbled at the ankles. Shortly after Anderson was taken into custody, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel responded to the scene and rendered medical aid for deployment of the TASER. Anderson was transported via a rescue ambulance (RA) to a local hospital in the City of Santa Monica. While at the hospital, Anderson went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased.”

One officer suffered minor injuries.

The death of Anderson is one of three during encounters with LAPD officers since the start of the new year. Los Angeles police fatally shot Takar Smith on Jan. 2 and Oscar Leon Sanchez on Jan. 3.

2 charged with murder in shooting death of man at LA Live restaurant – NBC Los Angeles

Murder charges were announced Thursday against two men in the shooting death of a man eating at a restaurant at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Sidney Barrett Morris, 43, was shot and killed in November at Fixins Soul Kitchen in the 800 block of West Olympic Boulevard. The shooter got out of a car, walked into the business and shot the victim, police said.

Phillip Pasco Clark, 33, of Los Angeles, and Santana Jermaine Kelly, 50, of Palmdale, each face one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime in case 24CJCF01997. Kelly also faces one felony count of arson of property of another.

They pleaded not guilty at their arraignment this week in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 25.

The victim in the Nov. 28 shooting was eating alone in the restaurant at the downtown Los Angeles entertainment complex. Clark allegedly walked into the restaurant and straight toward Morris, then opened fire.

Morris died at the scene.

Clark left in a vehicle driven by an unidentified person, according to prosecutors.

Kelly is accused of helping to plan the shooting, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County District attorney‘s office. The arson charge against him stems from an attempt to destroy evidence by setting fire to the getaway car the day after the killing, according to prosecutors.

Kelly and Clark are being held on $3.06 million and $4.06 million bail, respectively. Jail records indicate Clark and Kelly were arrested March 22. It was not immediately clear whether they have attorneys who could comment on the case.

Details about a motive were not immediately available.

The restaurant’s owners issued a statement after the shooting.

“Fixins Soul Kitchen is shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred this evening at our LA location,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.”

Fixins Soul Kitchen is owned by former NBA point guard and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.

“The victim, Sidney Barrett Morris, had dedicated his life’s work to fostering inclusivity and harmony within our society, making his untimely death all the more devastating,” LA County District attorney Gascón said. “I want to express my sincere condolences to Mr. Morris’ family. The brazenness of this shooting is alarming, and my office is fully committed to bringing accountability to those responsible for this heinous crime.”

Jury awards mom nearly $24M in 2017 LAPD killing of her son – NBC Los Angeles

A federal jury awarded $23.8 million in damages to the mother of a man who was fatally shot by two Los Angeles police officers while he was holding a metal bar that police initially believed was a machete.

Jesse Murillo was fatally shot Dec. 23, 2017, near his home in the 8100 block of De Soto Avenue in Canoga Park, where officers had responded to a family disturbance call. At the time, police said officers who responded to the scene found a person with a dislocated shoulder who was allegedly injured during an altercation with Murillo.

According to police, Murillo fled on foot to an alley, where he was confronted by police and the shooting occurred. Investigators initially said the man had been wielding a machete, but police later said it turned out to be a metal bar.

Murillo was a Navy veteran.

“I felt we had to pursue this to get justice,” Murillo’s mother, Tammy, told NBC4. She added that she misses her son ever day.

In 2020, the Los Angeles County District attorney‘s Office declined to file any charges against Officers Christopher Montague and Fred Sigman, saying they were “legally justified” in firing their service weapons at Murillo.

In their report on the shooting, prosecutors noted that Murillo “sprinted in the direction of Sigman” while holding what the officers reasonably believed was a machete but wound up being a metal tool.

On Friday, however, a federal jury in downtown Los Angeles awarded Murillo’s mother $23.8 million in damages, according to attorney Dale Galipo.

“The jury believed the officers were exaggerating, fabricating and lying as to what happened,” Galipo said.

Galipo said Sigman and Montague fired seven shots at Murillo without giving him adequate warning or time to comply. Murillo was struck four times.

Galipo said evidence at trial showed the trajectory of the shots contradicted claims that Murillo was running toward the officers when he was shot, but he was actually running away from them.

“No. 1, he was never facing the officers during any of the shots. No. 2, he was running away from the officers when he was shot, and No. 3, the fatal shot occurred after he already went to the ground,” Galipo said.

The attorney said the verdict is one of the largest payouts ever awarded in an LAPD shooting case.

“It was heartbreaking to watch the footage, the bodycam footage of police officers killing him. He didn’t deserve to die,” said Antonia Colby, Murillo’s niece.

Charges announced against woman in on-camera attack on Watts taco stand vendor – NBC Los Angeles

Charges have been announced against the woman who was seen on camera repeatedly strike a taco stand vendor in the Watts area of Los Angeles over the weekend.

The Los Angeles County District attorney‘s office announced Friday that Bakersfield resident Renee Latrice Hines, 36, faces charges that include use of tear gas, battery and unlawful possession of tear gas in connection with the attack. She pleaded not guilty earlier in the day during her arraignment in court, the district attorney‘s office said.

The altercation happened at the Tacos Ortiz taco stand located on 1651 E. 103rd Street on Aug. 6 at around 6 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Details about the arrested confirmed by Los Angeles police were not immediately available.

According to the street vendor, Hines had been taking tacos without paying. They say this has happened a few times in the past, but this time they denied her service.

According to LAPD, the woman used pepper spray on the street vendors.

The video shared on social media shows a woman authorities identified as Hines grabbing and shaking the taco stand table. At one point she grabs their street sign and throws it at the vendors. She can be seen swinging wildly at one of the people working at the stand before getting into the passenger side of a pink Lexus sedan and speeding away.

Hines remains in custody in Los Angeles. A preliminary hearing in her case is scheduled to take place Aug. 25.

It is unclear if the suspect has an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
