Attorney hopes Epstein docs reveal ‘prosecutorial failures,’ media complicity

(NewsNation) — Former senior deputy district attorney Matt Murphy, hoped the Jeffrey Epstein documents would shed more light on “the abysmal prosecutorial failure in South Florida.”

A third group of records related to the former billionaire and accused sex trafficker were released Friday, totaling more than 3,000 pages. The records are being unsealed on a rolling basis and include names of Epstein’s associates, including high-profile politicians and celebrities.

“They had 13 victims that came forward and they prosecuted on one which led to this joke of a deal,” Murphy said in an interview on “NewsNation Prime.” Murphy wanted more information regarding potential influences on former State attorney Barry Krischer, who changed course mid-prosecution.

Additionally, Murphy questioned why Vanity Fair did not run a story on Epstein in 2003, a decision that could have prevented subsequent victims. He expressed concern over the magazine’s failure to act responsibly, leaving victims, including a 16-year-old, vulnerable.

“A reporter was told about this in 2003, and Vanity Fair did not run it,” Murphy said. “They could have prevented a lot of these people from being victims.”

Murphy cited Vanity Fair’s invitation to Ghislaine Maxwell, who had been invited to their 2011 Oscar party after receiving a conviction in connection with Epstein’s crimes, as well as their use of the term “sexual peccadilloes” in an article to describe systematic sexual abuse of minors.

Murphy labeled such actions as inexcusable and urged a reckoning for those who continued to associate with Epstein despite his criminal convictions.

Murphy said that most of the names mentioned in the documents were already known. He emphasized a crucial dividing line in associations with Epstein, pointing to the year 2008 when the financier was convicted of felony sex crimes against a minor.

Murphy argued that those associated with Epstein before 2008 might get a pass, as there is no indication they knew about his criminal activities. However, he firmly asserted that anyone associating with Epstein after 2008, when he became a registered sex offender, should face scrutiny and disassociation.

Regarding high-profile names mentioned in the documents, Murphy addressed accusations against individuals like Prince Andrew from the royal family and Alan Dershowitz. While Prince Andrew’s case settled last year, Dershowitz faced allegations that were later recanted by the victim.

State will not proceed with Brighton Park migrant camp after environmental review, governor says

CHICAGO — After review by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), Illinois will not proceed with a migrant base camp in Brighton Park.

The governor’s office said the the IEPA cited concerns related to insufficient soil sampling and remediation. The office states that Illinois will work with the City of Chicago to identify alternate shelter options.

Construction was already underway at the 38th Street and California Avenue site before it was paused by state officials Monday.

The nearly 800-page report was released Friday. It found elevated levels of mercury, lead and arsenic.

Crews have already removed and disposed of the soil and added six-inches of crushed stone on areas of concern, but apparently the IEPA does not feel comfortable with the construction moving forward.

Chicago releases environmental report on potential Brighton Park migrant tent site

The Brighton Park community has protested the migrant camp being built at that location for weeks.

The site could have housed up to 2,000 migrants. The migrant camp was going to be funded by the state, but run by the city.

After news that construction on the site would not go forward, Mayor Brandon Johnson said
“the mission is still alive.”

The mayor said 500 migrants remain in police stations and at O’Hare International Airport, that’s down from 4,000.

Man sentenced in California’s first fentanyl-related murder case

(NewsNation) — In a first for the state of California, a man was convicted of murder for giving someone a lethal dose of fentanyl.

It’s the first of about two dozen active fentanyl-related homicide cases in Riverside County to go to trial.

American communities ravaged by the opioid epidemic are taking action to fight what many experts say is the deadliest drug in the country today: Fentanyl.

It only takes a small amount of fentanyl to kill, just a speck next to a penny for perspective.

California officials are starting to prosecute some fentanyl-related overdoses as homicides.

In Riverside County, 34-year-old Vicente David Romero was sentenced on Friday to 15 years to life in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder.

Romero was convicted of murdering 26-year-old Kelsey King in June of 2020 in the city of Temecula, about 85 miles south of Los Angeles.

During the trial, Romero admitted to giving King a “split” pill that he knew contained fentanyl.

King later overdosed and died on the synthetic opioid, which experts say is over 50 times stronger than heroin.

During the trial, King’s father said: “How do I tell her children that ‘your mother is dead because of a worthless piece of “blank” wanted to have sex with her and slipped her poison that killed her within three minutes.”

Riverside County District attorney Mike Hestrin said, “Drug-induced homicide is homicide.”

“Today’s sentencing not only reflects the gravity of what happened to Kelsey King, but what continues to happen to so many men and women in our community,” Hestrin continued.

The barrage of overdoses also spurred the city of San Francisco to recently announce a law enforcement task force that could result in murder charges for drug dealers who sell substances that result in a person’s death. That task force is set to be operational in 2024.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl more than tripled from 2016 to 2021. During that period, more people died from fentanyl overdoses than from meth, heroin, or cocaine.

Romero’s case is the first of 25 active fentanyl-related homicide cases to go to trial in Riverside County, according to the Riverside County District attorney’s Office.

Attorney calls wife of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer an accomplice

(NewsNation) — Long Island lawyer John Ray claims to possess evidence suggesting the wife of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is not only aware of but complicit in the murders of at least three women found at Gilgo Beach.

“She should be considered a suspect and not just a bystander or someone who’s been victimized by her husband,” Ray said in an interview with local newspaper New York Daily News.

Heuermann, 59, was arrested on July 13 and charged with the murders of three sex workers whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011. The Manhattan architect and father of two is also the main suspect in the killing of a fourth person.

Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce after he was arrested and charged with the murders.

“She is complicit in her husband’s solicitation and use of sex workers in his home over the course of years,” Ray said during an appearance on NewsNation’s “CUOMO.”

Ray suggested that Ellerup not knowing what her husband was up to in their home was “nonsense.”

“She was in this tiny little home, where she lived and he lived. She was upstairs when he would be downstairs having sex with these prostitutes, and he spent enormous amounts of money on them,” Ray continued. “And it was a regular thing that happened.”

Ellerup’s attorney dismissed the allegations and denied any link to the heinous killings.

NewsNation does not have proof of what Ray is suggesting. Authorities had initially ruled out any involvement of Ellerup, who they say had an alibi at the time of the crimes.

The Suffolk County Police Department said Ellerup was not in town at those times and do not believe Ellerup was aware of what was going on.

NewsNation has reached out to the Suffolk County Police Department and the district attorney for comment and has not heard back.

“I have a witness, a very credible witness, who I spent many hours with to interview,” Ray said. “And from that witness, as well as from the circumstances of this case, I know that Mrs. Ellerup is conning the public right now.”

But Ray’s refusal to reveal the witness’s identity has led to calls for further investigation and corroboration of the claims.

“She is a very, very credible witness,” Ray said. “I tested her using the usual tests for truth, and she tested out fine.”

Ray pointed to DNA evidence found at the crime scene, claiming two out of three hairs found on the wrappings of the victims’ bodies belong Ellerup.

“That alone puts her in the circle of suspicion,” Ray said.

However, skepticism remains high as legal experts point out that DNA evidence does not necessarily indicate complicity, especially if the victims were inside the wife’s own house.

NewsNation does not have proof to corroborate Ray’s claims. Authorities had initially ruled out any involvement of Ellerup, who they say had an alibi at the time of the crimes.

“I do not say that she was seen killing anybody,” Ray said during a Saturday appearance on “NewsNation Prime.” ”I say that she was present in the home and knew very well that this man had a long series for years of prostitutes coming to his home and paying them while she was there upstairs and present when some of this is happening.”

The Suffolk County Police Department said Ellerup was not in town at those times and do not believe Ellerup was aware of what was going on.

Attorneys for the family of Heuermann joined NewNation’s “CUOMO” to respond to the accusations that Heuermann’s now estranged wife should be considered a suspect.

“John Ray is trying to keep himself relevant in this case,” Robert Macedonio, attorney for Ellerup, said. “John Ray is the only one in this case that tends to benefit from any civil litigation, John Ray is trying to tie her into it so we can gather any assets she may or may not obtain from the bus, This mystery witness does not exist, I can assure you, as Ella was not involved in this, knew nothing about it.”

Vess Mitev, attorney for Heuermann’s two adult children, said Ray’s accusations are “a disservice” to the victims in this case.

“I think it’s a hamfisted, you know, porcine attempt to insert himself into a case that he actually has no involvement in whatsoever,” Mitev said.
